Citibank
After a lot of wrangling with the New York State Assembly, the City Bank of New York was established in 1812 to help the wealthy merchant class do banking.
In 1955, the company merged with First National Bank to become First National City Bank of New York, although this was later shortened to First National City Bank.
In 1974, the holding company changed its name to Citigroup. Following on from that the retail banking arm was renamed in 1976 to Citibank.
