Colgate
The Colgate brand is known the world over for its toothpaste and dental care products, and was established in 1806 by William Colgate on Dutch Street in New York City.
Colgate & Co. initially produced starch, soap and candles, and it wasn’t until 1873, 16 years after William Colgate’s death, that the company is recorded selling aromatic toothpaste in jar.
In 1896, the company’s signature product, toothpaste in tube, made its debut.
Run by William Colgate’s descendants, the company merged Palmolive-Peet in 1928 to become Colgate-Palmolive-Peet.
Today, Colgate-Palmolive is still headquartered in New York City, although its products are produced outside of the Big Apple. Other brands and item made by the company include Ajax cleaning products, laundry detergent, pet food, and soap.
