PSE&G
New Jersey’s largest supplier of gas and electricity, PSE&G is short for Public Service Electricity and Gas.
The company was formed as the Public Service Corporation in 1903 as an amalgamation of around 400 smaller gas and electricity providers. It adopted the name Public Service Electricity and Gas in 1948. Since 1985, the holding corporation that owns PSE&G was renamed to the Public Service Enterprise Group or PSEG.
PSE&G operates fossil fuel power plants, as well as three nuclear power stations. It also runs the power system for Staten Island, across the water in New York City.
Until 1980 PSE&G was also big player in the state’s public transport system. At one stage it operated public elevators, trolleys and bus lines. These assets were eventually sold to the state of New Jersey.
